

All revenue management decisions are bets on the future. Three forecasting horizons — each serving a different purpose
- Strategic forecasts (90–365 days out)— inform seasonal pricing architecture, contracted rate setting with corporates and tour operators, staffing and procurement planning. Based primarily on historical methods and market intelligence.
- Tactical forecasts (7–30 days out)— inform specific rate and availability decisions for the near-term booking window. Pickup-based methods carry the highest weight here. This is where daily RM decisions are made.
- Operational forecasts (0–7 days out)— inform front desk upselling strategy, housekeeping staffing, F&B ordering, and last-minute availability decisions. Accuracy is highest but the window for rate action is narrowest.
Why forecasting accuracy compounds
A forecast that is never evaluated against actual outcomes is not a forecasting discipline — it is a planning exercise. Identifying systematic biases and correcting them is how accuracy improves over time.
